White Bisons and Music Festivals

White Bison ~ 6″ x 6″ oil on hardboard panel
For sale starting July 31st on Daily Paintworks
I finally had a whole four hours to paint yesterday! What a concept! In the last month I’ve had a mural to complete, four farmer’s markets to make jewelry and baking for, three different sets of family visiting, three to four days a week at my “regular” job, and volunteering for the Art’s Council, plus two kids to take to swimming lessons every day, a cottage to rent out, three specialty cakes this week and a normal household to look after. Wow! Summer! We look forward to it all year, and then it goes by so fast that we feel like we missed all the beautiful weather.
But a whole four hours to paint by myself, with nobody around, was bliss 🙂
Here’s one of the reasons you haven’t seen much of me in the last little while. But I’m done, and proud if I do say so myself! It looks much better in real life…the surrounding cedar walls give the whole thing a bit of an unpleasant yellow tone.

Festival Days

Festival Days 8″x10″
oil on canvas panel NFS
This is one of my most recent paintings. When it comes to painting, lately, I have been very discouraged and uninspired. I had a really busy summer doing shows and teaching workshops, and as good as that sounds, it really took something away from my art and I feel like I haven’t produced anything very good in quite a while. Every painting feels overworked and exhausted before it is finished. Sooooo….I decided to work on materials I didn’t care about, so my intention wouldn’t be selling, with my beautiful kids as my subject matter, so I wouldn’t want to sell…and I whipped off this one in a few hours. I had a hard start, as I was still fighting that “block”, and I wiped her off about four times, before I finally committed, but I’m really happy with how it turned out. I still feel like I could have gotten a bit looser, but, maybe next time:)

Music Festival Poster AND New painting–HELP!

I know I said I’d post the poster the next day, but I thought I’d better get it okayed from the festival committee first, and it did. They love it, so now you get to see it. It doesn’t have all of the text on it yet, but the design part is finished.

I’m also posting this painting that I’ve been working on for a few weeks. I really need some help, so please, please comment! I hate the background color. I did thumbnails, and it worked on a small scale, but this big, it just looks so…yellow…YUK! It isn’t finished, obviously, but I didn’t want to spend a lot of time on painting the candy jugs before I decided on the new background color…but, I can’t figure out what color would work. I have no artists to consult in this teeny tiny town of mine, so I’m depending on you fellow artists to help get me unstuck! So do you think it should be darker or lighter? There is fairly strong light coming from a window on the right hand side…The front part of the painting won’t be yellow, it has little glass inserts with coffee beans and candy behind them. I want the light effect to be pretty dramatic, but right now, all of the values are too similair.
Any suggestions, anybody?
